Hat designer’s surprise rise to fame

NEW YORK ― When soul legend Aretha Franklin belted out "My Country 'Tis of Thee" at U.S. President Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony last year, the whole three minutes weren't't just hers alone. They were Luke Song's as well.

He knew it ― because, immediately after Franklin's powerful performance was over, his phone started ringing off the hook.

"We were inundated with personal and media phone calls from all over the world," said Song, the man who created the oversized gray hat that the Queen of Soul was wearing for the inaugural stage.

"We were surprised by the amount of attention and interest," he said in an interview with The Korea Times.

The Korean-American designer isn't exaggerating, as the media buzz ― both on and offline ― over the so-called Aretha Hat was huge.

Everyone from celebrity talk show host Ellen DeGeneres to women on ABC's "The View" talked about the hat, while The New York Times, Los Angeles Times and other newspapers wrote feature pieces on the headgear's success.

Dozens of Web sites were created to highlight the custom-made chapeau, which was dubbed as the "most talked about fashion item" that arguably got more media coverage than first lady Michelle Obama's dress.

The hat instantly took Song to fame.

And all of this hoopla naturally meant more business for him.

His clientele used to be 90 percent African-American, churchgoing women before, but now he has a much wider consumer base after Franklin's stage.

"Our demographic has been shifted to more main stream," said the Detroit-based milliner who sold thousands of the Aretha Hat since it made its debut. Priced at $179, the piece now comes in a variation of colors.

Volume for new orders is still high, which keeps Song and his team of experienced seamstresses busy around the clock.

The 36-year-old has now cemented his success as a designer, but today's accomplishment in the industry is something he would've never imagined more than 10 years ago.

"I initially wanted to become a research bio-chemist," said Song, who says he had no intentions of taking over his parent's hat business, "but after studying three and a half years of bio-chemistry in college, I found that the science career was not me."

He did realize, however, that his passion was in the Arts. So Song made a switch to enter the Parsons New School for Design in New York as a first step to kick off his lifetime career.

"My design philosophy is simple," said Song, who creates custom hats that range from $200 to $3,500. "Design something beautiful and timeless without restrictions."

His work will soon be displayed in the Smithsonian, as well as other museums, art galleries, movies, magazines and fashion shows.

Asked whether he incorporates elements from Korean culture into his work, Song said he does so naturally, unknowingly.

"I don't begin a design set out to make any 'Korean' inspired items but I believe that I unconsciously place Korean elements into the designs," said Song, who visits Korea at least once a year.

He says thinking current, relevant and fashion-forward is important in his design work.

"There is forward thinking and always staying a few steps in front of everyone... I guess it is called avant garde in its truest form," he said.

Korean woman sues US police officer

A Korean woman, who works at a massage parlor in Georgia State in the United States, is preparing to sue a police officer, who arrested her for prostitution after receiving oral sex from her, JoongAng Ilbo newspaper said Saturday.

The 29-yer-old woman, identified only as Cho, plans to sue the American law enforcement officer, whose name was not identified, for "unnecessary sexual violence," JoongAng said citing local newspaper reports.

Cho is willing to reconsider her $500,000 lawsuit if the police officer is willing to consider dropping his case of arresting her for prostitution, it said.

According to the piece, the plainclothes officer came to the place where she worked, asked for oral sex for $80. After the "service," he arrested her for prostitution.

After realizing his client was a police officer, Cho preserved the condom used by the police officer in a refrigerator. She plans to submit it as evidence in case she has to really proceed with the planned suit, it said.

According to JoongAng, the local police bureau said, "There are no specific rules on how the prostitution crackdown should be conducted. But we tell our police officers not to engage in unnecessary sexual activities."

S. Korean facelift popularity in China proves fatal

A Chinese woman died after a failed facelift at a beauty parlor in China, which earned her trust by falsely telling her that a South Korean doctor would operate her, Chinese media outlets said.

Chen Li, a 38-year-old woman from Hunan province last month, saw an advertisement from a beauty parlor that said a South Korean medical doctor would visit Changsha, the provincial capital.

Chen, who had been considering a plastic surgery, saw it as a "rare" opportunity to get a surgery directly from a South Korean doctor. South Korea is now perceived as the "Mecca" for plastic surgery throughout Asia, including China.

She paid 270,000 yuan ($39,600) and agreed to a surgery that would rearrange her teeth and remove scars, said Chinese news sites, citing Singaporean newspaper, Lianhezaobao.

Unlike what was initially advertised, there was no South Korean doctor visiting the city.

The surgery was performed on the morning of April 19.

Until 4 p.m., there was no news coming out from the surgery room. Chen's mother asked about it.

The beauty parlor's chief told her: "Something unexpected happened. She was already transformed to a hospital," the report said.

Her family members immediately rushed to the hospital where Chen was supposed to be. But they only found her in the cadaver room, already frozen, the reports said.

The details regarding the exact cause of her death was unknown. But the case was resolved, the report said, after the beauty parlor paid Chen's family 560,000 yuan (US$82,000), it said.

With the popularity of South Korean plastic surgery, some Chinese hospitals advertise they have "connections" with South Korean hospitals. Some beauty parlors in local provinces also have jumped the wagon by illegally performing plastic surgery.

Korea’s 'hourly lecturers' struggle to make ends meet

While South Korea's economic upturn is being touted as a "model case" for economic recovery from the recent global economic slump, not everyone in the country is seeing the benefits of the alleged robust performance of the Asia's fourth largest economy that would host this year's G-20 summit, including some who are highly educated yet struggling their make ends meet.

Literally called "hourly lecturers" for their lecture-for-pay based contracts, the nation has many Ph.D. holders who are not hired full-time by a university for a college, but provide lectures.

The local Chosun Ilbo newspaper on Saturday ran a story of a 38-year-old lecturer, who holds a doctoral degree in humanities. It's been eight years since he has been working as a lecturer at numerous universities across the nation.

On the days when he has to give a lecture in a provincial school, he has to get up early and dash to the Seoul Train Station. A roll of ``gimbab'' is his breakfast, while he goes over his lecture material. He then puts himself on a few hours of train that would take him to a school where he is scheduled to give a three-hour lecture.

He gets paid 36,000 won per hour for the task.

With this kind of payment, his annual income seldom goes over 6 million won.

"I've tried almost everything to make ends meet, including private tutoring and translation of books," said he, whose name was withheld in the piece.

The nation's excess Ph.D.s are partly products of South Korea's once famous and now notorious educational overdrive.

Most of these highly-educated overachievers want to become professors, but with now so many Ph.D.s around these days, these people find it hard to be employed as a full-time professor.

Instead of looking for other opportunities, many of them try their luck by firstly agreeing to become an hourly lecturer. That doesn't give them any insurance benefits that regular employees enjoy, but they believe that doing so will help them get upper edge in the future job openings in the university.

But often this turns out to be the self-imposed trap they don't find an easy way to get out. It often extends into several years, just like the case shown above, without job security.

Most of these hourly lecturers' imminent concern is to make ends meet. "It takes a lot of time to prepare a lecture. And usually you get to teach only three or four hours a week. You cannot live on that level of income," Chosun said citing the lecturers it interviewed.

I think that the language is one of the basic components of a culture. That's why I think that I need to talk a bit about Korea's languange: Hangeul. Hangeul (한글) is the name of the Korean alphabet. It was created by King Sejong in the 15 th century.

This is King Sejong.

The Korean alphabet is made of symbols which represent heaven, earth and the human figure (ㅇ,ㅡ, ㅣ). Hangeul is written horizontally from left to right, and vertically from top to bottom. The alphabet has 14 consonants and 10 vowels. Here's a chart showing all the characters of the alphabet:

Kim Yu-na among Time's most influential people

Vancouver Olympic gold medalist Kim Yu-na was included in the ``World's Most Influential People'' in Time Magazine's online edition, Thursday.

The Korean figure skater placed second in the ``Heroes'' section.

In a column contributed to Time, Michelle Kwan, the most decorated figure skater in U.S. sports, praised the 19-year-old. ``I have never seen a skater with such a combination of artistry and athleticism,'' she said.

Kwan hinted the Korean deserves to be a heroine as her performance influenced the sport itself as well as hopeful athletes.

``Kim's inspiring performances in Vancouver changed the face of figure skating forever. Those six and half minutes on ice left not only a mark in the record book but also an indelible impression on millions of young girls around the world,'' wrote Kwan.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Bill Clinton came in first for his devotion to efforts to help Haiti after it was devastated by the earthquake in January. He was praised as ``a brilliant choice to coordinate U.S. support earlier this year, along with President George W. Bush.''

The other athletes among the heroes included this year's Masters winner Phil Mickelson, and tennis star Serena Williams. Mickelson was chosen for his engaging personality, and strong relationship with his family, especially his wife who is struggling from cancer.

Government Bends Its Rules for Beneficiaries of State Scholarship

The government is apparently ignoring its own university admission guidelines for foreign students, set up last September, by exempting those on state-funded scholarship programs from the screening process.

Critics say this means the qualifications of students benefiting from the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) program could be lower than those of students studying here on their own financial means. It could also create discriminatory issues, some foreign students have said.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, however, refuses to budge from its policy of not requiring students invited under the state program to meet any admission guidelines.

Lee Kyung-lim, an official dealing with foreign student policy at the ministry said, "We have decided not to apply the rules to students under the auspices of government scholarship as we believe the program is working well."

Currently under the admission guidelines, foreign students are required to have reached grade four ― out of six ― in the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK).

Alternatively, they have to prove their English proficiency with a minimum score of 550 out of 990 in the Seoul National University-developed TEPS; 550 out of 677 in the paper-based TOEFL, 210 out of 300 on the computer-based test, and more than 80 out of 120 on the Internet-based test.

Some foreign students are complaining about the unfairness of the GKS program.

"It is considered an honor to be selected as a government scholarship student. Thus, the program should recruit high quality students. However, I met many state scholarship students who speak Korean very poorly," said a Turkish student in Busan who pays his own way.

Even a student who benefits from the government scholarship pointed out problems with the program. In an email to The Korea Times, the student said, "The process of selecting scholarship students is carried out by Korean embassies in related countries in an unfair process. Most of the students, including me, do not take any exams or undergo a screening process."

"I got this scholarship thanks to my father's high position in my home country's government. That's why most NIID students don't have a good educational background."

Complaints came not only from foreigners studying here but from overseas.

An Egyptian who serves as a Korean language guide in his country is hoping to study through the scholarship program.

But he says he hasn't even been given an opportunity to apply as the Korean Embassy has already nominated students according to its own rules.

The National Institute for International Education (NIIED), the agency supervising the scholarship program, recruits students.

Asked by The Korea Times why the embassy didn't advertise the recruitment for the program like other embassies in other countries, a consular official said, "We have already selected three students from Ain Shams University and will recommend them to the NIIED."

In comparison, Japan and China announce the student selection process and list the criteria for the scholarship program. The Japanese government conducts examinations in Korean and selects the 10 best students for interviews.

The Chinese government recommends the top scores from a total of a possible 400 points. Two hundred points for the Chinese proficiency test, or HSK, 100 points for the English examination and the other 100 points are calculated from the grade point average (GPA).

Korea, a Forerunner in 3D Media Technology

Who hasn’t yet seen “Avatar,” the recent mega-hit film?

Well, in case you haven’t, let me tell you. You watch it 3D, wearing a pair of special 3D eye glasses. The movie created a frenetic buzz with its unprecedented 3D technology.

And Korea had its share of contribution.

One of Red Rover’s strengths is that the company is not only equipped with the most advanced 3D hardware, but also has the capacity to create exceptional 3D contents. During the exhibition at CeBIT, Red Rover sealed off $ 5.3 million worth of export deals with over 140 overseas clients.

Another Korean company “Pavonine Korea Inc.” was also put in the spotlight at the exhibition. Pavonine Korea has been participating in CeBIT since 2003 and is currently working in partnership with T-Com, a landline telephone network provider in Germany, and with the Fraunhofer Society, a German research organization. Pavonine Korea is well known in the European market for its technology in developing large-size 3D optic panels.

Korea’s 3D media technology stirred up interest at the CeBIT 2010 held in Hanover, Germany from March 2 through 6. The CeBIT is the world’s largest trade fair showcasing digital IT and telecommunications solutions for home and work environments.

James Cameron, the director of Avatar, used a 3D Stereoscopic Monitor manufactured by a Korean company “Red Rover” for the final rendering of color and dimension. Red Rover also recently exported a 3D TV animation titled “Dandy” to Canal+, a French premium pay television channel.

Also, the world’s leading mobile phone manufacturer NOKIA proposed a $ 5 million deal with CNAPS, a Korean company known for its Hands-Free Car Kit. With a Hands-Free Car Kit, you can talk on the mobile phone without using hands or earphones or headphones.

“Innoworks Co., Ltd” was also showered with attention for its iPhone covers. Despite the high price, the products’ sophisticated design earned much acclaim from the buyers.

Mr. Kim Pyeong-Hee who supervised the operation of the Korean Hall at CeBIT commented, “There are numerous small- to medium-sized Korean companies that are armed with exceptional technology and design. Their competitiveness has been acknowledged at this exhibition. They are anticipated to further expand their territories in the European market.”

Likewise, there are many, many Korean companies that are like hidden gems. They are constantly developing and honing their technology, pursuing innovation, silent and yet staunch.

What else can I say, but “Go, our hidden champions!”
