South Korea to Build Robot Cities by 2013

If you’ve liked watching Lt. Commander Data, the positronic-brained second officer, in the sci-fi series Star Trek, then you’d love to hear this.

The South Korean government plans to build two robot-themed parks close to Seoul, one in the bustling seaport of Incheon, and another in Masan by the year 2013.

The megaproject, the first of its kind on the planet, is estimated to cost a whopping $1.6 billion, and will feature an array of robotic marvels allowing visitors to interact with tomorrow’s machines.

According to reports published on the web site Korea.net, the two cities are being developed as futuristic hubs, poised to become the country’s Silicon Valley of robotics.

Robotics is considered to be one of South Korea’s booming industries and it has grown by leaps and bounds over the past five years, recording a 40 percent jump since the year 2003, the site reported.

To ensure that the robotics sector continues to see such growth rates, recently, the government drew up what is known as the Robot Ethics Code, a code of ethics that will prevent android abuse by humans as well as the other way round.

It’s basically a how-to manual for both robot-makers and robot-users that tells them how to relate to robots.
Given that the government aims to install a robot in every household by the year 2020, perhaps, that isn’ such a quixotic idea.

What’s more, in a recently-out book titled “Love and Sex with Robots“, a British Artificial Intelligence researcher David Levy, predicts that robots will advance to such phenomenal levels in the coming years that it’ll be possible for humans to even marry them by 2050.

East Timor inks energy MOU with Korea

LEE YOUN HO
XANANA GUSMAO
=While visiting East Timor with a delegation of government officials and six energy-related companies, Minister of Knowledge Economy met Prime Minister of East Timor Xanana Gusmao to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for cooperation in the field of petroleum resources in Dili on Wednesday (Oct. 15).
This is the first MOU concerning energy that East Timor has signed with a foreign government since its independence in 2002.
As Korean companies are working with the government of East Timor on surveys for establishment of a LNG plant in East Timor, East Timor's prime minister agreed to positively consider providing Korea with status as a preferred recipient nation of natural Gas.
Along with Korean firms' construction of an LNG plant in East Timor, the MOU covers joint research and development for yet-to-be-developed reserves, and establishes a ministerial-level resources cooperation council to continuously expand the bilateral energy partnership.

East Timor - South Korea

East Timor has great potential for Korean investors, the honorary consul of East Timor to Korea Park Tae-woo said.

``East Timor with rich natural gas is seeking active foreign investment in its various development projects,'' said Park who has successfully made his name as a scholar in politics and international affairs, a lecturer, a diplomat and a poet. At the same time, he works as the deputy spokesman for the Grand National Party (GNP).

In an interview with The Korea Times, he said that profits from natural gas development have continued to grow, reaching $243 million in 2005 from $41 million in 2004.

Other areas favorable for foreign investment are infrastructure such as roads, highways, power plants and buildings. Furthermore, as its natural environment is still intact, the tourism industry also has potential for Korean investors to build golf courses, hotels and resorts.

``Everything is now just getting ready to be developed, '' Park said confidently based on what he'd learned through friends such as Xanana Gusmao, now prime minister of East Timor, whom he met while he was teaching in Taiwan.

He also sees the potential for a closer bond between Korea and East Timor through history.

Both countries have been under foreign occupation, and he is said to have sensed the same eagerness for peace among people of East Timor. East Timor was under Indonesian rule for almost three decades before it gained independence in 2002. Prior to the Indonesia occupation, it had been under the control of Portugal for nearly 450 years.

East Timor is a very small country _ half of the island of Timor _ and is only the size of Gangwon Province with a population of one million.

Park just finished his third trip to East Timor last month. He said he had seen the country striving hard to get prosperity and build democracy.

``Lights in the parliament didn't go off until two or three o'clock in the morning,'' Park said: ``It was reminiscence of the Park Chung-hee's presidency during which the country was all for economic development.''

Another similarity is religion. Despite a long-term occupation by a Muslim country, the majority of the East Timorese are Christians.

As Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, according to the CIA Fact Book, was only $800 in 2005. Everyday life for the people in East Timor can't be harsher, Park said, asking for humanitarian aid for East Timor.

``The country still needs significant assistance from outside. Helping them can also benefit Korean investors by creating a friendly atmosphere.''

He expressed regret over not having been able to visit an orphanage that he had planned to do during his trip last month. On next visit, he will adopt one or two children to support, for whom only $20 can cover living expense for a whole month.

After declaring its independence in 2002, East Timor has received assistance from many countries including Korea.

In 1999, Korea dispatched the ``Evergreen Troops'' of 440 soldiers to East Timor as part of the U.N. Peace Keeping Force (PKF) and they stayed until March 2003.

Between 1999 and 2005, Korea _ at both the private and government level _ sent $6.2 million worth of humanitarian aid.

The consular office is going to celebrate its official opening on Tuesday, Nov. 13.

KOREAN STUDY REPRESENTS A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITIES~

I first arrived in Bali(Indonesia) then took KOREAN AIRPLANE to South Korea.I arrived at the Gonzaga Hall residence on Sogang University.it was about one week before the semester was due to start and there were not many students around.Everything felt a hundred times quieter, which is perhaps because it was also my B'day that day. However, all the lonely fellings disappeared because I soon made friends with my neighbours and they invated me to join them in a welcoming dinner. The people I met at Gonzaga hall were very friendly. Before the semester started, the University organized a tour around Seoul for all new students to get acquainted with living in a new environment and also for us to make new friends. This made my transition very easy.
And now I'm living in the lovely land of South Korea!I speak fluent Korean as well as English. Also, I am very passionate about learning Spanish % Russian and trying to engage with it as much as possible in a busy lifestyle that I am leading :) I <3 to sing and act. I <3 playing Soccer, the guitar and bass and I also play the table tennis and piano. I am Majoring in Electronics and Computer Eng.at the Sun Moon University. Loving my study and University life, totally rad!I'm bubbly, happy, positive and love to meet new people ! Multi and intercultural-ism I'm SO affirmative for! Don't be afraid to talk to me.n any offer of help will be totally awesome! Absolutely amped to meet y'all! "Bless"^L^
